About Petaluma Educational Foundation
Enhancing educational excellence in all Petaluma area public and non-profit private schools through Grants, Scholarships and Cultural Enrichment Programs.
In 1982, a group of teachers, business leaders and community activists in Petaluma, CA convened to develop funding solutions for the schools of Petaluma, a town of 55,000 in the wine country of Sonoma County in northern California. A controversial new state law, Proposition 13, had resulted in a dramatic decrease in the revenue, creating major deficits throughout the California school system.
The outcome was the creation of the Petaluma Educational Foundation (PEF), a privately funded, non-profit organization whose primary goal is to raise money in the community to directly benefit the schoolchildren of all Petaluma's 31 public and non-profit private schools. Since its inception, the Foundation has truly made a difference through several significant programs:
Grants to Teachers: Since 1983, PEF has given over $1,150,000 to teachers and administrators to fund projects not covered in the school budget. Our emphasis is to encourage excellence in the classroom through innovation
Scholarships for High School Graduates: Each year, we awarded over 200 scholarships worth more than $210,000 to seniors graduating from all five Petaluma high schools. The scholarships are awarded for need, academic achievement, athletic excellence and a commitment to service in the community.
Cultural Enrichment Programs: Each spring and fall,
PEF brings to Petaluma, at no charge to the schools,
live theater and music performances.
Managed Funds: PEF manages over $4,000,000 in
component and endowed funds with clear directions as
to how the funds will benefit the schools in
Petaluma.
The Foundation receives no public funds. We rely on
the support of our generous partners and donors who
consider a gift to education an investment in our
future.
